A successful new treatment for Varicose Vein patients is in use at the New Jersey Vein and Cosmetic Surgery Center in West Orange and Lincroft, New Jersey.
William A. Wolkstein, M.D., a board certified plastic surgeon and vein specialist, has been using the Endovaricose Vein Laser for the treatment of this problem which affects millions of American women and men.
The new Laser was recently approved for use by the FDA for the treatment of varicose vein disorders.
According to Dr. Wolkstein, “Many patients who would ordinarily require a ligation and stripping of the greater saphenous vein with general anesthesia can now be treated by laser without general anesthesia and with less pain, bruising, and down time associated with ligation and stripping.”
Under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation for patient comfort, a laser fiber thinner than a piece of spaghetti is inserted into the saphenous vein at the knee. The fiber is positioned under ultrasound control, and laser light energy is used to close the vein.
“Instead of removing the vein from groin to knee as in modified ligation and stripping, the saphenous vein is closed down by the laser and the vein is absorbed by the body,” said Dr. Wolkstein.
The procedure, which takes less than 90 minutes, is performed at The New Jersey Vein and Cosmetic Surgery Center’s federally certified outpatient center and is covered by Medicare and a number of heath insurance companies.
“Not all patients are candidates for this procedure, and a consultation and thorough evaluation are necessary,” stated Dr. Wolkstein.
